The bark of Shagbark Hickory is one of the most distinct in North America, with large 1″ long strips of bark that peel off the trunk.
Its characteristic peeling, platy bark gives this tree four season interest no matter the location. Strong wood for timber and sweet nuts for wildlife make this tree a historic and contemporary staple of eastern North America.
Hickory nuts ripen in fall and provide food for chipmunks, squirrels, black bears, rabbits, raccoons, white-footed mice, and foxes. Bobwhite quail, ducks, Blue Jays, crows, pheasant, and Red-bellied woodpeckers also enjoy the nuts. The exfoliating bark provides roosting habitat for bats and Brown Creepers. Deer brows foliage.
Shagbark hickory nuts are enjoyed by humans, too! Once a staple for native Americans, the nuts are sweet, high in protein and fiber, similar in taste but milder than black walnuts.
