Dawn redwood is a large, conical-shaped tree reaching 70 to 100 feet high. The fern-like feathery foliage emerges light green in spring, changing to dark green in summer, then a russet-brown in autumn. This plant prefers moist, deep, well-drained soils that are slightly acidic. It is tolerant of wet soils but intolerant of early freezes. This plant has minimal pest and disease problems.
This tree provides winter cover for birds, small mammals and deer.
